The Magners North of Ireland Golf Championship, one of the Province’s most prestigious golfing tournaments took place in July 2009 (13th -17th) at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Over 300 competitors took part in the event, which is considered one of the leading, and most successful golf tournaments in Ireland.

After five days of intense competition Wayne Telford from Rathmore Golf Cub emerged as the overall champion defeating Paul Cutler from Portstewart Golf Cub in the final play off.

Former winner of the tournament and one of the world’s most respected golfers Darren Clarke helped launched this year’s competition.

The Championship is still one of the most sought after titles in amateur golf on this island. Over the years, it has attracted some of the most talented golfers in Ireland. Former winners such as Darren Clarke (1990), Michael Hoey (2000) & Gareth Maybin (2002) are just three names who have gone on to make a huge impact in the international golf scene.

Gavan Morris Magners Marketing Manager said: "This is the seventh year that Magners Irish Cider has supported the North of Ireland Golf Championships. Over the years, we have formed a very successful partnership with the Golfing Union of Ireland Ulster Branch and members of Royal Portrush Golf Club. This was however the first year that we had the launch in the club, which in its self is a privilege but the real bonus was to have with us one of the world’s best known golfers Darren Clarke to launch this year’s championship.

"The quality of the championship certainly sits well with Magners with its authentic heritage and dedication to quality, positioning it as Northern Ireland’s number one Cider brand. In fact, the tournament has become an integral part of the high profile Magners sports portfolio.

"With a great venue, great golfers and enthusiastic supporters during the weeklong tournament it only remained for us to add the final ingredient to complete the week –lots of Magners over ice!"

Chairman of the Golfing Union of Ireland Ulster Branch Mr Ivor McCandless thanked the sponsors Magners Irish Cider for their continued support of what has become the largest Amateur Golf Championship on the Ireland.
